It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Joseph Edward Brabant, age 84, after five months in hospital. Joseph "Joe" passed away on July 1, 2024 (Canada Day- his favourite holiday) at Greystone TCU. He was born and raised in Windsor, ON. He attended St. Geneviève Elementary, Assumption HS and the University of Windsor. While in high school and college he was a member of the ROTP where he found his future career in the Canadian Forces and joined after graduation. After a distinguished 33 year career, serving at many bases across Canada, Joe retired in 1994 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Joe was an amazing leader, supporter and past president of Dignity Canada Dignité. He was also a founding member and past president of Prime Timers Ottawa-Outaouais. He was dynamic, a strong leader and supporter of LGBTQ+ persons in Canada.

He took care of his Mom when she was at St.Patrick’s and learned as much as he could about nursing homes in Ontario. He was a past president of St.Patrick’s Family Council and was elected to be on a provincial organization.

Joe is survived by his sister Donna Hansmeyer of San Antonio, TX, nephew William Hansmeyer, his wife, Jennifer and grand-nephew Jack Thorp of Missouri City, TX of as well as a host of family and friends. He is predeceased by his parents Edward and Dolores Brabant and nephew John Hansmeyer.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Gaston Charpentier and Richard Racine, close friends, who visited Joe daily providing him comfort and loving care, the staffs of Ottawa General (4th and 8th floors) and Greystone TCU for their caring support.

His many friends and family will remember Joe as he was: “Big smile, rosy cheeks, contagious laugh, subtle humor, super intelligent, kind and caring just to name few. “ He will be missed.
