On September 24, 2023, Clare passed away peacefully at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice after a short battle with cancer.
Beloved husband of Maureen Grant for over 40 years. Proud father of Amanda (Grayson Somers) and Andrew. Adored “Grumpa” to granddaughters Belle and Maggie Somers. Clare will be missed by his brother Cleo and sister-in-law Cecile as well as nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Felix and Viola Fassette and sister Claudette Fassette.
Born in Sudbury, Clare grew up in Windsor then moved to Ottawa with his family for his final year of high school.
After graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Clare joined the federal public service working in Human Resources. During his career, Clare worked for Citizenship and Immigration, Taxation, and Agriculture Canada from which he retired in 1996. Clare enjoyed his work in Human Resources, particularly leadership development, and was a very popular instructor.
Clare had a wide range of interests including fishing, fly tying, woodworking as well as spending time in nature, particularly at the family cottage. Clare was also a voracious reader with subjects covering a diverse range of topics - he was great at Jeopardy.
The family would like to thank the Home and Community Care nurses and the Hospice Care Ottawa team especially the staff at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice for their care and support.
In keeping with Clare’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on September 28, 2023 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held prior to the Service from 12:30 - 1:00.
An interment for the immediate family will be held following the service.

Dear Maureen and family. We are very sad to hear of Clare’s passing. Friends will comfort you, memories will strengthen you, and all the love will bring you peace. We send warm hugs to you. xx Carolyn and Tony.
Maureen, Amanda and Andrew, my heart is sad at the passing of “Grumpa”. I know the last several months have been very hard. I am praying for you all that you will find peace and comfort as you go through your grief. As I sit here, I am fondly seeing Clare from this past Christmas putting together the space ship you all got the girls. The girls loved it and I think he enjoyed too in his way. Sending healing prayers and comforting hugs. Love, Rachel
