Shirley passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on July 4th, 2023, at the age of 97.

Lovingly remembered by her Four children - Rick (Genevieve), Mike, Dan (Carol) and Sue (Val). Grandmother to Samantha (Chris), Desiree, Drew (Rebecca), Devin (Karen), Matti (Clare), Kayla, Emma and Turner. Great grandmother to William, Johnathan, Lillian, Benjamin, Joan, Aito, Piet, Walter and George. Fondly remembered by her devoted sister Diane Edwards, her niece Judy Edwards and her great nephews Jay, Jonny and Darren.

Shirley was an original homeowner in Cardinal Heights, spending 67 years in the same house. She dedicated her life to raising her four children after her beloved husband (John Aito) died suddenly in 1964. Shirley was a longtime employee of the National Research Council before retirement in 1991. Diane and Shirley have lived together for the last 30 years. The two “Old Pelicans” were inseparable and could often be found at the Slots or the GT Boutique.

Shirley’s family would like to thank all those who had a part in her care. Thanks to the many personal support workers especially Jamila, Julie and Caesar. We are grateful to Tiah and Alice at Home and Community Care and Doctor Aiello who worked tirelessly to keep Shirley in her home until her passing.  A special thanks to the Mowat Street neighbors (old and new) for their enduring friendships and support.
