Evan Stewart Cameron

On 12 April 2023, Evan Stewart Cameron, during an adventure on the west coast, while reading a book by his favorite author, closed his eyes and peacefully passed away.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann Cameron Ells (Nick), son Duncan Cameron, brother Richard Graeme Cameron, daughter-in-law Michelle Cameron, grandchildren Katie, Josh, Charlie and Maddie, cousin and most recent partner in adventure Ann Norris and close friend Sharon Cameron. He will also be missed by his numerous friends and fellow hockey, NASCAR, football and collector friends.

Stew is pre-deceased by his much-loved son Robert Evan Cameron, his parents Evan Graeme Cameron and Kathleen Pearl Cameron (Stewart). 

Born into a military family, Stew joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at a young age and enjoyed a military career that spanned 35 years and included postings to Marville, Geilenkirchen, Cold Lake, Comox, Winnipeg and Ottawa.  He excelled in the forces as an Aero Engine Technician and rose to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. 

His love of aircraft lead him to become part of the local Flying Club in Germany where he enjoyed many hours of flying and earned his pilots licence. Once posted to Cold Lake, and with the birth of his son Bob, Stew’s flying hobby shifted and his aptitude for mechanics lead him to the local stock car track where he spent many weekends building, repairing and driving stock cars.  This turned into a lifelong hobby that he shared with Bob and all his loved ones. Stew also enjoyed throwing darts, playing, coaching and watching hockey and football. He was a die-hard Elvis, Richard Petty and Vancouver Canucks fan. 

As a trusted and highly valued member of the armed forces, he rose through the ranks in the CAF always ensuring that he was a good example to the members he led.  He attended every airshow possible taking multitudes of pictures and although he favoured the CF 104, he also became an expert on other aircraft and took pleasure in sharing that knowledge with his troops and friends. His curiosity and ability to determine ‘how things worked’, made him an excellent Flight Safety investigator as he travelled and investigated CAF aircraft incidents and accidents.

After retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces Stew could be found visiting hobby stores, coin stores, sports venues and dance competitions. As in all things, he took being a dance dad very seriously and rarely missed seeing his daughter Ann dance. He spent hours with his son Duncan quietly doing Sudoku puzzles and drinking coke zero.  He was extremely supportive of his children, grandchildren and loved ones. He approached life, friends and loved ones with enthusiasm and joy and, as his brother Graeme has commented “he loved to enjoy life and laugh.”

Stewart re-kindled his love of travel in the last years of his life, choosing Vancouver Island as his new home and his cousin Ann as his travelling companion. Together they travelled to Graceland, drove across Canada, visited the grandchildren and, as he had in previous years, continued to find car, airplane, train museums and stock car tracks, in even the most obscure places.  

His final day was spent travelling with his cousins Ann and Carl, taking pictures of boats in the harbour,  texting with his daughter Ann, and reading his book.  He brought laughter, calm and strength to all who knew him. He is missed.

Please join the family, 22 July at 12:45 in front of the Beechwood Cemetery main building. Vehicles will follow the Military lead car to the National Military Cemetery for interment and a brief ceremony.  Following interment join family and friends in the main building for a celebration of life.
