Rick passed away peacefully at home at the age of 70, on Saturday, June 17, surrounded by family and close friends. He was a kind soul, always gentle, considerate, even keeled and supportive. Grieving family members include his step-daughters Jennifer Todd and Kate Todd ( Dylan Loose) with granddaughter Mia Todd-Skwarko and her fiancée Josh Virey.

Rick was born in rural Breslau, SW Ontario of good Mennonite stock. Of German/Swiss and British background for sure, with relatives in the USA, part of that immigration journey to escape religious persecution so many generations ago. His parents passed away many years ago and Rick was the adult-in-charge of his surviving younger brother Don, who suffered head trauma from a motorcycle accident as a teenager. Rick is also survived by his other siblings Joy and Murray and his nephew Bobby. Rick was the oldest of the 4 Weber children.

His education at the University of Waterloo in Mathematics served him well in his 35+ year career as a manager with Bell Canada. He had an affinity for outdoor activities including hiking, biking, skiing, golf as well as curling and in his later days, pickleball.

In our annual golf game with fellow UoW friends, Rick was the model of consistency – playing a low risk, down the middle type of game that usually had him at the top of the scorecard. That was also his character … never flashy but rock solid.

In 1996 Rick met Janet Esther Babcock, daughter of the late John and Esther Babcock. She was the love of his life. They married in 1999 and Rick transitioned from lifelong bachelor to devoted husband and step-father to Jen and Kate and Poppa to another wonderful young lady, Mia. He cherished these new roles in his life. Together they bought their home on Brock Place, did massive renovations and created a garden and flower paradise.

During Janet’s courageous experience with incurable pancreatic cancer just 2 years ago Rick was her steadfast supporter and strong advocate. They were married 22 years. Faced with his own terminal diagnosis, Rick remained stoic and clear of mind. He will be sorely missed by family and friends who appreciated his quiet and dignified ways.

Family and friends are invited to meet in front of Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, at 10:30 AM Saturday July 8, for a short walk to the gravesite. The interment takes place at 11 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life in the wonderful gardens at Rick’s home on 1621 Brock Place, Orleans. Consider donations to The Canadian Cancer Society.

One of the gentlest people I ever met and (as well) a real gentleman (except when playing against him in some sport). We'd lost touch when I changed continents but kept track through friends. The photo is absolutely perfect. Captures his soul.
