Gerry (Sam) McGee passed away peacefully on April 5 surrounded by his family.
After studying at Loyola and McGill in Montreal, Gerry served in the Canadian military and went on to train as a civil engineer. He took pride in his work on projects like Place Ville Marie, and the international bridge at Prescott, Ontario. Gerry moved to Ottawa and took a leadership role in what is now Engineers Canada, spearheading the national engineering accreditation process.
Far more than his work accomplishments, though, Gerry took delight in every moment he spent with his family. From his siblings to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, his nieces and nephews, he drew joy from speaking with them and sharing ideas and passions. That was who he was. He loved to speak with and find out about everyone he met. When he made a friend, that person remained a friend, often for life.
He will be deeply missed by his children Sean (Kelly), Neil (Kathy) and Sharon, his grandchildren Sarah, Daniel, Elizabeth, Lauren, Heather, Brendan, Jennifer and Robert and his great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother John, and was predeceased by his siblings Rita (Joe - deceased), Frank, Jim and Bob (Carol - deceased). He was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Hogan) from whom he was separated for a number of years.
Gerry benefited through his life from the support of health care providers, but the family would like to thank in particular the staff of the Westwood Retirement Residence, where he lived for many years, and the staff on 7-northwest at the General Campus of the Ottawa Hospital, who provided caring support during his final days.
A funeral mass and gathering to celebrate Gerry's life will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Ottawa on April 22 at 10:30 am. Comments can be posted at www.beechwoodottawa.ca.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his name to the Royal Ottawa Foundation: https://www.theroyal.ca/get-involved/ways-to-donate/donate-in-honour-or-celebration

My most sincere sympathies to Gerry's extended family.
I had the pleasure of getting to know Gerry as a result of our mutual association with both Loyola High School and Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). Gerry was a wonderful advocate for both communities. His many efforts on behalf of both were legendary. He was highly respected and I consider it a privilege to have known him.
God bless the McGee family members as you mourn his passing.
Gerry will be remembered for all the volunteer and advocacy work he did in the community.
