On September 18, 2022, Hazel Mary, wife of Donald L. Mackenzie for 63 years, died at home after a brief illness. She leaves Donald, son Ian R. Mackenzie, favourite daughter-in-law, Julie, grandchildren Alexander and Laura, in Ottawa, and daughter Helen M. Mackenzie, favourite son-in-law Bill Kehew, grandchildren Everett and Jessie, in Woodstock, Ontario. She also leaves family in England, brothers John (Valerie) and Roger (Heather) and his family. Born in Oxford, England to Reginald H. and Hilda M. (Bennett) Bowley, she emigrated to Montreal in 1957 where she met and married Donald in 1959. Graduate of Carleton University in 1979 and long-time employee of the National Gallery of Canada, she retired in 2003. Thanks are due to Rosemary and the team of palliative care nurses and PSWs who cared for her in the last days of her life.

All are welcome to a memorial service and reception at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, ON) on Friday, November 4th at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, her memory would be best honoured by a donation to any favourite charity. Hazel’s favourites included the Unitarian Service Committee (now known as Seed Change), the Cancer Research Society, and Help our Students Program.

Dear Friends I am sorry for your loss of an extraordinary human being who made her mark on those who met her. I'll remember our student days together that grew into a life-long friendship in spite of my living in Switzerland. Peace and love to you all. Elsa (Bern)

Dear Donald and family, We are sorry for your great loss. We shall miss Hazel's smile and dry sense of humour. She was our lovely neighbour for many years here in the building and not seeing her again fills us with sadness. Please accept our condolences. With peace and love, Ingrid & André

Loved keeping in touch over the years and learning about your many travels together. I still remember the first time I met my new aunt and how excited we all were to welcome her to Nappan. Expo was a memorable visit and my first taste of beer and ginger ale ( am sure the beer was minuscule amount) And poached pears, I thought they were so exotic! Hazel cooked the only pumpkin pie I ever liked and a cold and snowy Thanksgiving in Ottawa was so truly welcome for a homesick student. Hazel will be in my heart forever.

So many memories Donald of those times Hazel, you and your children shared visits with us and our girls. Hazel, a very special woman, gave her best and brought out the best in others.
I’m glad Helen and Ian are able to be with you.
With Caring, Luella
