With profound sadness we announce the passing of Thomas Lawrence Sheasgreen. He leaves in grief his wife and best friend, Merle Reid, with whom he married in 2001. He leaves behind also his three sons from his first marriage, Kevin in Chicago, and Glenn and Brian in Ottawa, as well as his brother Rob Sheasgreen, and niece Melissa, whom he adored. He will be particularly missed by his Montreal cousins, Marlene and Patrick Commerford, and all of Merle’s family here and abroad, for whom he has become a favourite “in-law”, best friend, and loving uncle.
Tom enjoyed his rich career with Bell Canada, first in Montreal, then Saudi Arabian and Malaysia, and finally back to Ottawa, where he retired. Tom made many friends with whom he loved to fish until golf took over as his passion.
The first sign of Alzheimer’s appeared in 2004, but that did not stop Tom. He continued to live and love as before. He delighted in traveling the world with Merle, especially if it meant visiting the famous golf courses. He never forgot how to play golf, thanks to his generous and loving friends. He also never forgot how to be the gracious, kind gentleman everyone adored. In recent years, his love of music brought him comfort; he listened constantly to Oscal Peterson, and the Ladies of jazz, and his favourite pastime had been dancing with Merle to some of his favourites.
Tom was happy. His smile and twinkling eyes over a martini were his trademark.
Tom’s wish was to be cremated, so that is ashes could rest in the “sunny corner” of the chapel of Beechwood Cemetery. His inurnment will be private. Those who loved Tom will celebrate him in our hearts. Later, a mass will be celebrated at Ottawa's Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, where he and Merle found solace.
Those wishing to make donations are asked to contribute to the Gary J. Armstrong Long Term Care Home, where the nurse and personal care workers gave him the best of care, during his more difficult years.
