Peacefully at home surrounded by family, Martha went to join the love of her life, our Dad Kerry, on October 31. Predeceased by her parents William and Annie McNeary and her sister Julia. She is survived by her 5 children, Wayne (Denise), Cheryl, David (Leslie), Michael and Lynda. Also survived by her sister-in-law Diane and nephews Donald and Scott and nieces Donna and Kelly.
Missing her love and beautiful smile are her grandchildren, Patrick, Derrick (Melissa), Darryl, Melanie (Dan), Alex, Jesse, Lindsay and Jessica. Mom was thrilled to have known her 5 great granddaughters, Ellie, Vannah, Indio, Jolie and her namesake Martha Jean. She will be greatly missed by her close friends Brian, Travis, Katie, and Debbie.
Born in Canso, Nova Scotia, Mom grew up in Dartmouth where she met her future husband Kerry in the local hockey rink. Luckily her Dad was with her and approved of the young Elvis lookalike. On exchange with the US Navy, Mom and Dad married in Norfolk Virginia. Mom was given away by her dear friend, Rolly West, as her parents were unable to make the trip.
They returned to Canada and over 7 years, welcomed 5 children in Halifax and moved multiple times before finally settling in Ottawa in 1973. Mom was a stay at home mother who enjoyed bowling, attending hockey games, and her job at the Dairy Queen. Once Dad retired, they spent their time taking road trips, travelling to golf tournaments and going to the casino.
After we lost Dad to cancer in 2014, Mom showed her incredible strength and resilience by being up for any adventure we threw her way, including driving her nephew Donalds Ferrari and flying in his helicopter. She loved the various road trips taken with her children to NS, Nfld and the US.
Special thanks to Dr Lominy and the Palliative Care Team for making it possible for Mom to leave this world on her own terms in the place she loved surrounded by the people she loved.
Service to be held on Friday November 12 at 1pm at Beechwood Cemetery followed by internment in the NMC. Due to Covid restrictions, the service is limited and by invitation only. We will be celebrating Martha’s life from 4-6pm at Lonestar restaurant located at 1211 Rue Lemieux St near St Laurent Shopping Centre for all those unable to attend the service.
