Margarida Maria Barcelos passed away on April 11, 2026, at the age of 76 years and 11 months.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Lagroix; her daughter, Elsa Da Costa (Robert Bellizzi); her two stepdaughters, Liane Lagroix (John Glass) and France Lagroix (Yohan Guyodo); and her four grandchildren, Nell, Isaac, Nora, and Jade.
Daughter of the late Vital Soares Barcelos and the late Marie Leonor Bettencourt, she is also survived by her two sisters, Adelina Barcelos‑Roma (Joaquim Roma) and Maria Elsa Dinis (José Dinis), as well as her extended family and close friends.
Born in Beira, São Jorge in the Azores, Margarida immigrated to Canada in 1960 at the age of 12. A passionate advocate for education and the French language, she became an elementary school teacher and later enjoyed a long career as a school principal.
A simple memorial service will be held on Tuesday April 28th at 10h30 at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church in Vanier, followed by an interment at Beechwood Cemetery. The family will receive condolences as of 9h30.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the team at the Ottawa Hospice – Maison de l’Est for their warm welcome and dedication in ensuring that Margarida’s final days were peaceful and well supported.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites anyone wishing to honour Margarida to make a donation to the Ottawa Hospice – Maison de l’Est.
