John “Johnny” Johnson passed away peacefully at the age of 96. He is predeceased by his parents (Gudmundur and Elin Johnson), his siblings (Mundy, Steve, and Ella), and his daughter (Rae Johnson).
John was a devoted husband to his beloved wife June Johnson (née Reid) for over 73 years, was the proud father of his son Allan (Wendi), and proud grandfather of Adrian (Jen), Joslyn (Ricky), June (Mark), Curtis (Lyndsay), Chelsea, and Kristin (Miguel), and even prouder great-grandfather of Everly and Blythe. John was the eldest brother to his surviving siblings, Lena and Stanley.
John spent his life serving his country. John volunteered to join the Navy during WWII when he was a mere 17 years old. He fought bravely in the Battle of the Atlantic as an ASDIC Operator aboard the HMCS Dauphin. Upon discharge from the Navy at the end of the War, he became a Registered Industrial Accountant for the Federal Government of Canada until retirement in the 1980s. John stayed active in his retirement years volunteering his accounting services for many charitable organizations, including the Canadian Legion Poppy Fund, his local Canadian Legion Branch, and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Ottawa of which he and his wife, June, were founding members.
John loved spending summers with June at their cottage in Grand Beach, Manitoba, where they enjoyed golfing, long walks, and memorable evenings with friends and family. John also was a skilled curler at the RA Curling Club, where he was made a life-time member because of his many years of service to the club.
John will be dearly missed by family, neighbours, and his many friends. The family would like to thank the Staff at Perley Health for their wonderful care and kindness.
Friends may pay their respects at the Memorial Gathering on Friday, April 14, 2023 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Beechwood Funeral Home, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa.

My mom Millie Empson so enjoyed visiting with her cousin Johnny.
Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.
Dear June,
Bill and I are sending you our sincere condolences in the loss of your dear husband "Johnny/JJ" of 73 years.
We knew him from the Ottawa 2 East Building at Perley Health. J.J. was a table mate of Bill's who also served in the Royal Canadian Navy. June and I would have conversations on our daily visits as to JJ's well being and the long halls which we had to navigate to get to visit our loved ones. Granddaughter Chelsea assisted her grandmother, June, by driving her to and from the Perley Health on a daily basis.
We pray that you will find peace in Psalm 23, "The Lord is my Shepherd", and Psalm 121, " I will lift mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help". May all your fond family memories carry you through these upcoming difficult days. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
