Dear Helen passed away peacefully at the Monfort Hospital on August 15th, 2023 after a brief illness.

Helen was born in Ottawa on July 3rd, 1927 to her loving parents Donald and Mildred Rogers. She attended Lisgar high school and then followed with studies at McGill University to attain her bachelor of Arts and Library Science degrees in 1964. She worked proudly at the NRC and National Library and Archives of Canada. She held the position of Chief of the SDI Division on her retirement. While there she was in charge of the implementation of the Telidon system as well as numerous projects with many other colleagues. She enjoyed playing tennis and loved horseback riding. She also had a interest in painting which included lesson from the late Henri Masson. Her love of animals was present in the care of  Jock, Peanut, Buddy and Ricky; little furry dog friends. She will be deeply missed by her many friends and neighbours especially her lifetime school mate  Anne Hardy Maklem.

Thank you to all who helped care for her both at her home and at the hospital.

As per her request, there will be no visitation or funeral. She will be laid to rest with her parents at the Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.

Donations may be made to the Ottawa Humane society.

Forever in our hearts.

I am very sorry to learn that Helen has passed away. She was a cousin on my father’s side, and in recent years she became a dear friend. We talked to each other by phone about once a quarter and met a few times on my rare visits to Ottawa (from my home in Vancouver). We had many interests in common and I very much enjoyed our conversations, which ranged from family history to current events. Helen was descended from my great grandfather’s brother, James Cooney, who settled in Bytown in 1847, through his daughter Mary Cooney, who married Francis Rogers. A few years ago, Helen collaborated with me and other cousins in writing a history of our Cooney’s from the Irish Famine until now. I think she very much enjoyed that project and the book that we eventually published.

My love and condolences to all her friends and family. Helen was the cousin I never met but came to admire through her contributions to our clans history. May she rest in peace.
