Captain (Rt’d) Douglas Albert Cushman, RCAF

Nov 28 1946 – Oct 31 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Albert Cushman. In 1966 Doug began his career in the RCAF and served 21 years attaining the rank of Captain as a Fighter Pilot where he flew CF101 Voodoo Interceptors plus various fixed wing aircraft and helicopters throughout Canada. Because of his vast flying experience and formidable skills he was selected to fly at the Bristol Aerospace factory in Winnipeg where he served as the Chief Maintenance Test Pilot where he managed to fly every Canadian Voodoo in service during that time. He taught on staff at the Instrument Check Pilot School and later joined Transport Canada HQ in Ottawa where he flew Cessna Citations biz jets as a Standards Check Pilot.  He finally capped his flying career with a seven year stint at the Civil Aviation Authority in the Cayman Islands. Doug was a master story teller and stand up comedian who was able to entertain and captivate his audience with his unending repertoire of stories and anecdotes. It brings to us a sense of peace knowing that now and forever he will be with his one true love, Kathy, who left us far too soon in 2017. He is survived by his 3 children Gillian, Susan and Peter and his sisters Ruthie and Peggy.  Arrangements have been made to have Douglas interred in Ottawa.

“Cush you were indeed a fine steely eyed fighter pilot!”

Dear Gillian, Susan, and Peter
We have so many memories and photo albums full of over 50 yrs of times spent with your Mom and Dad. They were part of a group of nursing school colleagues and their spouses who shared many events, vacations, reunions and a few parties over the years. Doug was an avid contributor to the fun and laughter of all our gatherings.
Doug made the ground shake as he roared across the sky in his VooDoo at a Winnipeg air show. So long Captain.
So “kids” , may some special memories bring you comfort at this time.

Cush, you have been a great friend. We well remember your amazing Expediter routines in the 416 Squadron mess - a great show that lives on in our memories. We miss both you and Kathy. BTW - thanks for the nickname.

Such sad news. A "one of a kind" Air Force man with a quick wit and one who was never at a loss when it came to telling a good story. RIP friend.

Dear Gillian Susie and Pete, we are so sorry you have lost your dear Dad. We have such great memories of many happy times with your Mom and Dad as you know, over the last 50 years. There will never be another C-man. He will be missed.

Doug's email address used to be a contraction of 'Ex-Dakota-Driver' from his Air force days, and he was a member of "Bridge8", a now extinct group. We also played at the Blackburn Community Centre on Fridays, where we pretty well owned last place, with a few surprising exceptions. Many Grand Slams, Doug.
