After a wonderful life beginning in Guanajuato, Mexico, our family matriarch passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the age of 99. Beloved wife of the late Victor Miguel Avalos. Loving mother of Margarita (George DaCosta), Victor (Ann), Andrew (Lillian) and Carlos, devoted caregiver and son. Cherished grandmother of George, Jason (Gina), Christopher (Tania), Lee (Vanessa), Kelly, Aria and Miles. Great-grandmother of Colton, Maya, Ava, Gia, Isabel, and Miguel. A special thank you to Heather for her exceptional care and to Pati and Joanne in Andrea’s time of need. Much appreciation to the palliative care team and to the PSWs for their care and support. Family and friends are invited to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church (400 St. Laurent, Blvd.) for a Funeral Mass on Thursday, November 16th, 2023, at 1:30pm with a Reception to follow at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa). For those who wish to make a donation in memory, you may do so towards The Ottawa Heart Institute, Diabetes Canada, or St. Elizabeth Foundation. What a wonderful lady! We were your next-door neighbours at 55 Spruce Street and I have very fond memories of her during my childhood. I remember how soft and tender-hearted she was with us kids. She didn't mind that we would sit and play on her tiled verandah because it was so elegant. She never shooed us away, in fact she would offer us dinner mints that she kept in a bowl by the door. We always took a handful because we were kids and we had no class! Lol
My mom says that when she first moved in next door she was pregnant and almost due with me and didn't know anybody on the street. Then when I was born, your mom showed up on our doorstep with a pink, hand-knitted baby hat and booties. Needless to say, she was really touched by the gesture for being the first to extend a hand of friendship to her.
As a child, she would invite my brother and I to sit on her patio furniture in the backyard for a refreshment with her and Miguel. At the end of our visit she would let us into the shed where the shelves were packed with toys and boardgames and let us choose one to take home as we were leaving.
When her daughter and grandson Georgie visited, she let me push him in his stroller up and down the sidewalk. I loved doting on him and for my efforts, she surprised me by giving me a pink jewelry box filled with baubles and jewelry.I was so thrilled! (I still have the jewelry box.)
She, along with Miguel were always busy keeping the house so nice and tidy. I would see her watering her flowers that were sitting in flower beds on the porch ledge, always tending to them. (I also remember how diligent Miguel was at the upkeep of the house. I would always see him with either hedgeclipppers in his hands or a can of paint and doing touchups.) All of us kids agreed that the best looking house on the street-if not, the neighbourhood was the Avalos house! It stood at the top of the hill and was always so pristine looking with immaculately trimmed hedges in the front and backyard that framed the house so nicely.
She was also lady-like in that I would see her leaving to go get her hair done weekly and coming back with a plastic bonnet tied to protect her hairdo- as was the style back in the day. If there happened to be a beauty pageant on TV, Carlos would run into the house to tell her. On Sundays I would see her dressed up and going to church with her husband-a proper lady and mother.
I'm sad that she passed away but she lived a nice, long life and your family was very blessed to have her as the matriarch. I'm sure there is a spot in heaven reserved for her as she set such a fine example of a wife and mother. May she rest in heavenly peace reunited with Miguel and may she watch over the rest of the family in the years to come.
