Unveiling of the Historic Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Granite Tablets

When:
Where:
The Ottawa Police Service Memorial Cemetery, Section 113, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, ON

Join us for a solemn and significant event as we unveil the historical, decommissioned granite tablets from the Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial (CPPOM). These tablets, etched with the names of police officers who tragically lost their lives while serving their communities, hold a deep and enduring connection to our nation's history.

The Memorial's roots trace back to the line-of-duty murder of Ottawa Police Constable David Kirkwood in 1977, marking the beginning of a tradition to honor fallen officers. The original granite tablets, first unveiled in 1994 at the base of the Summer Pavilion on Parliament Hill, list the names of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice since 1879. These tablets were replaced in 2000 and have now found a new home at Beechwood Cemetery.

This 30-minute ceremony will provide a reflective space for us to remember and honour the lives of these brave individuals.

We invite you to join us in this act of remembrance and to view the tablets that symbolize the sacrifices made to keep our communities safe. Please arrive a few minutes early to ensure a prompt start to the ceremony.
