It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the sudden and unexpected death of our beloved daughter, Layla Julie Rioux. Layla died with her parents by her side at CHEO on February 19 of a fulminant streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. She was 3.5 years old.

Although Layla’s time on this earth was brief, it was filled with love and life. Those who spent time with her describe her as sassy, spunky, determined, extremely articulate, funny, and deeply loving. She had a presence far bigger than her small frame and brought energy and joy wherever she went.

Layla was the light of our lives. She filled our home with laughter, fierce determination, and endless affection. Being her parents was the greatest privilege and joy of our lives. We will miss her warm cuddles, her strong will, her expressive conversations, and the way she made every ordinary moment feel extraordinary. The silence she leaves behind is immeasurable, but so is the love she gave us. We carry her with us in every breath.

Layla will be especially missed by her older brother and best friend, Luke. The two were inseparable, sharing a bond far beyond their years. Together, they filled their days with imaginary worlds, constant laughter, and the kind of companionship that only siblings can know. Layla admired Luke deeply. He was her protector and her playmate, and she was his constant shadow and fiercest ally. Their love for one another was profound, joyful, and unwavering.

Layla adored being a big sister to her little sister, Tessa. Though they were nearly the same size, Layla took great pride in guiding her, teaching her, and including her in her games. She delighted in showing Tessa how things worked, offering gentle (and sometimes bossy) direction, and celebrating her smallest accomplishments. Their bond was already growing into something special, and Tessa will grow up carrying the imprint of Layla’s bright and loving spirit.

Layla’s short life was rich in adventure and experience. As a family, we explored the world together — visiting parks and museums, travelling, swimming, attending festivals and events, and filling our days with curiosity and joy. She embraced every new place and activity with enthusiasm, wonder, and her unmistakable spark.

Layla will be deeply missed by her loving parents, François and Kristen; her brother, Luke; her sister, Tessa; her grand-maman Céline and Grandma Carole; her aunts and uncles, Julie, Meghan, Ryan, Adam, Derek, and Mendy; her cousins, Maya, Madison, Ava, Zoe, Liam, Victoria, and Jayden; her cherished daycare community; and extended family and friends, all of whom were touched by her spirited personality and loving heart.

We are grateful to the staff at CHEO for their compassion, dedication, and care during Layla’s final hours.

We also appreciate the outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and coworkers during this immensely difficult period.

Layla’s life, though far too short, was radiant and deeply meaningful. We will forever be grateful for the 3.5 years we were given with her.

A celebration of Layla’s life will be held on March 10 at 1:00 p.m. in the sacred space at Beechwood Funeral Home and Cemetery, located at 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa. Those unable to attend the service in person, may attend virtually by accessing this live stream link.
