1962-2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our precious Shelley at Perley Health on January 18, 2026 after a very long courageous battle with Dementia.  She leaves behind her devoted son, Ryan, parents David & Esther Ganderton, and her two cats, Dasha & Echo.

Shelley had a successful 33-year career as a Logistics Officer in the Canadian Navy.  She enlisted in the Regular Officer Training Plan, completed a BSC degree at Dalhousie University and served in various positions on the east coast including time in HMCS Preserver & HMCS Cormorant, as well as six months in CFS Alert.  In between all this she managed an MBA at St. Mary’s University and a final posting at NDHQ Ottawa.  She loved life, loved people, loved to travel, was a loyal friend and avid photographer.  Most of all she loved her son dearly.  Family was very important to her and she will be remembered by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

We wish to thank the staff at Rideau 2 South for the exceptional care Shelley received for the 55 days she spent there.  Our thanks to her many PSW’s with special mention to caregiver Mary G. for her compassion & dedication.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 9, 2026, at 1 p.m. in the Sacred Space of Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, located at 280 Beechwood Avenue in Ottawa. The burial will follow at the National Military Cemetery, in Beechwood Cemetery and a reception thereafter.

Shelley and I were on several courses together and although I never really got to know her i remember her as a bright very competent woman with a keen sense of compassion. Very sad to see you go.

The Ganderton Family,

Please accept my most sincere condolences of a special person. I was saddened this past weekend to learn of Shelley’s illness and her crossing the bar. Even though many years have passed since I had any interaction with Shelley, I still have fond memories of periodic encounters and as course mates on the MARS IV Common course, dare I say almost 40 years ago.

Many obits speak of Shelley’s competence, leadership, and kindness/loyal to friends. I would like to share one of my memories of Shelly from the aforementioned course we attended (to the best of my memory). After a few days of learning about ship Stability and Buoyancy and solving assigned problems, Shelley sensed we needed a change of scenery and organized a small group of us to go on a weekend ski trip to Whistler/Blackcomb. After a couple of runs to get our “sea legs” and a little bit of premature Après-Ski time, we found ourselves on a challenging run where one of us got going too fast, lost control/caught an edge, had a terrible fall, and injured her arm. The injured course mate wanted us to continue our day/evening of skiing. Shelley would have nothing of it, suggesting that not going to the hospital was a non-starter, we would accompany her to the hospital, and would wait with her in the waiting room for as long as it would take – and so we all did with pleasure (and probably avoided further injuries). After 6 hours or so, we eventually learned that our classmate’s arm was fractured. This is but one memory that I have of Shelly’s leadership, kindness, loyalty to shipmates and impeccable values that made her so very much respected and liked by all. In my humble opinion, today’s world needs a lot more Shelley.

Godspeed Shelley.

Richard Puz: "Loss leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal."

Here is wishing that the Ganderton Family and Their Close Friends find comfort in all their great memories

I am truly saddened to hear of Shelly's passing today. We were of the same Sea Log vintage and our paths crossed frequently, especially in the early training and OJT phases of our careers. She was a force of nature, a pleasure to be around and her laughter, warmth and smile are fond and lasting memories. My sincerest condolences to all her family and friends.

I am very saddened to hear of Shelley’s passing. Our careers crossed many times and I have fond memories sharing stories with her and hearing her infectious laugh. To her family; know that she was well-liked and respected for her competence throughout our small Sea Log community and the larger Logistics family as well. She will be missed.
Rest in peace, Shelley.

Dear David and Esther, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your loving daughter Shelley, and Ryan for your caring Mom. Losing a family member especially one as thoughtful and people focussed as Shelley is extremely heart breaking.

While Shelley and I were never employed together during our time with the Navy, I heard many reports over my tenure of all the great work Shelley was doing, and how well she inspired and cared for those around her. She lit up many peoples' lives, and always gave it her all.

I pray in thanksgiving for her good service to family, friends, and to those within our Military community to whom she gave so much. May perpetual light shine upon Shelley and may she rest in eternal peace, and may God Bless and comfort you at this time.

It was a priviledge and honour to have met and become friends with Shelley during our time working together with National Defence. A beautiful life too brief. She was a light to this world, and one that will keep shining always in our hearts. May her family and loved ones find peace knowing what a difference she made in so many people's lives.
