Eric Archambault passed away peacefully at home on May 25th surrounded by his beloved family including his wife Paula (nee Walker), daughter Jennifer Lawrence (Scott Emmons), son Robert Lawrence, and his adorable baby grand-daughter Meredith Lawrence-Emmons.  He will be dearly missed by his brother-in-law Michael Walker and his wife Malika, and his nephew Christoper (Gabrielle) and niece Maria (Anthony).

Eric was born in Montreal in 1964 and was predeceased by his loving parents Dr. Raymond Archambault and Yvette Mallette. He was an avid cyclist and racewalker, and passionate about the arts and supporting his local community.

Eric graduated from Carleton University in 1988 and went on to complete graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills Michigan in 1994.  He worked for a variety of architectural firms including Montreal based Shulim Rubin architecte, and Ottawa based Gary Stunden Architect, Lemay, Dorval, Fortin, Doyle Architects, and Griffiths Rankin Cook Architects, before finding his true passion as a teacher.

His love of teaching allowed him to experience art and culture across the world and he spent several years teaching in Finland as a guest lecturer at the Lahti Polytechnic Institute of Technology and the University of Oulu Dept. of Architecture.  He returned home to Ottawa and completed his career as an Adjunct Professor and Sessional Lecturer at Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, Carleton University where he taught for the past 20 years.

Eric’s life was defined less by his work and more by his gentle character and the relationships he had with his friends, colleagues, students, and most importantly, his family.  Eric was a step-father only in legal terms, having raised, nurtured and loved his children Jen and Rob from ages 6 and 2 respectively.  He was a devoted and loving father who focused on family first.  Paula and Eric met in Toronto and eventually settled in Ottawa where they were blessed with an ordinary life of simple pleasures, and an extraordinary life of deep love for each other.

Eric’s illness came as a complete shock to the family and throughout his 5 year cancer journey he provided lessons in hope, positivity and resilience that will stay with his loved ones forever. Perhaps because of his architectural training, Eric found a way to make hope fit into a space that others wouldn’t have thought possible.  His love for his family sustained and defined him.  When he became a very proud Popi in September his determination to live was renewed because of his immense love for baby Meredith. We were and will always be very proud of him.

He will forever be in our hearts.

I knew Eric as my professor, advisor, and reference. He was incredibly kind and always encouraging to his students. Eric was constantly energized by creativity and new ideas. One of the things that made Eric so special was his willingness to share his personal projects and interests with us, especially his passion for VJ. Seeing his dedication and enthusiasm firsthand motivated us to pursue our own passions with the same gusto. Eric was also extremely supportive of Kosmic, a student-run art event. Without his support, Kosmic 2023 wouldn't have been the same. We will always be grateful of his involvement and encouragement. His legacy will live on through the many students he influenced and the positive impact he had on our community. My sincere condolences to his family.

We are so grateful to have known Eric during our time at Carleton. We both had the privilege of teaching alongside Eric in studio, and witness the magic he brought to the school and to his students. He was such a thoughtful man and educator, an advocate for students and their creativity, a trusting soul, and someone who was deeply admired and beloved by his students. Eric made space for everyone, he made room for every wish and thought and imagined world, and gave space to sit with and listen to his students carefully and with such kindness. He was so strong and yet so sweet, and he took on life with such grace. We feel spoiled to have spent time beside him, and to share in the joy he created at Carleton for anyone lucky enough to work with him. He has raised many generations of thoughtful thinkers, architects, and creatives, and his legacy will live on in them and at the school. He was, in all ways, so full of life and he shared that with us all.

Thank you for making space for us, Eric. We send you love and light, and will miss you very much. We send our heartfelt condolences to all of Eric’s family and loved ones who we are certain will deeply miss him in all ways. It is a tremendous loss, but such a courageous and beautiful life.

I met Eric in the winter of 2020 when I joined the School of Architecture as a contract instructor. His generosity, kindness, and humbleness in sharing his teaching and life experiences with me were crucial and enlightening and I will be forever thankful to him. I will always remember the conversations we had before heading to the studio or when we returned from it at the School. I wish we could have talked more and catch up with things. Thank you for being there when I needed it. Rest in peace wherever you are now, Eric. You'll be forever remembered.

Very sorry to hear of Eric's passing! Although I had not seen him for some years, the Carleton School of Architecture DSA to Rome with him and John Cook was one of the best experiences of my university days - made so in great part thanks to Eric's humour, passion and fun for life's adventures. My condolences to his family, for a great smile and a great person who will be very much missed by many.

Dear Eric,

Thank you for your warm friendship and for sharing so many great moments with Julien, me and our little rascal Lián. Whenever I think of you, I will always remember the first time when we met where you gave us a little architecture tour of the design of the War Museum. You took us to the back of the building and on top of the rolling grassland, your voice echoed, full of intelligence, grace and passion. That’s how I always remember you as a friend, someone who’s full of love and hope for his family and friends, with great enthusiasm for his many artful interests. I got to know you when you were already battling cancer, however you did not allow it to stop you from sharing and creating the little joys in life. I will forever miss our impromptu picnics by the river, you silent gaze looking afar while keeping tab of the discussion and whatever Paula was laughing at. Your great sense of humor, as the self proclaimed “Mr. Honeypot-who-never-get-lost-in-the-snowy-forest”, always brightens the room. I don’t think I will meet another person who would marvel about tofu as much as me. I count myself lucky to have gotten to know you as a dear friend, and to witness the beautiful love story you had shared with Paula is inspiring. The world is a little dimmer without you being in it, but the lovely memories of you will always bring joy and warmth to us and that will live on for many years to come. Rest in peace my friend. I miss you dearly.
