Anand Acharya passed away peacefully at home on March 3, 2024 at the age of 55, after an almost two-year battle with brain cancer surrounded by his wife and daughters. He remained unbelievably positive and accepting throughout his journey and lived each day to the fullest, spending his time with family and friends, travelling, biking, paddle boarding, walking, skating and reading. Two days prior to his passing, when the doctor asked him how he was doing he told her with all sincerity that “he was living his best life ever”. While he reached great heights in his professional life including being a Captain in the RCAF on the C130, obtaining a PhD in Economics from Carleton and being an Air Canada pilot on the Boeing 777, the thing he was most proud of was his family which he always made his top priority. He is survived by his wife (Kusum), his daughters (Nina and Jasmine), his sister (Anjali) and his parents (Padma and Jana). His wish was to be remembered and not mourned. To this end, a Remembrance of Life will be held at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Sunday, March 10th, 2024 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations for research may be made in Anand’s name to the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada

I was a DC9 captain when I met first met Anand. We were both ex-RCAF and He was so obviously special. Very Professional, prepared and a pleasure to work with. Our first cycle together was extremely busy and He was totally up for the challenge. Over the years we would pass in flight planning and it was wonderful to see his progression and catch-up on his achievements. I am devastated by this sad news. My sincere condolences to all of his Family. Peter

My thoughts and prayers are with Kusum, Nina and Jasmine, but also his parents, Jana and Padma, and his sister, Anjali. Anand was a lovely human being and he will be missed. We will toast his life over a bottle of red wine and think about how lucky we were to have gotten to know him.

Jana and Padma Acharya

It was March 20th 1968, Vernal EQUINOX, Padma delivered, cute baby Boy arrived into this world. We named him Anand, a name that is synonymous to Joy, blissful Happiness, and much more, so forth, recurring in the scriptures of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh religious reciting (hymns and prayers). Padma and I were ecstatic with our baby boy, good fortune. It was another two months, having completed Canada Immigration Visa and required vaccinations, baby Anand and Padma came on Air-Canada flight which I navigated to Montreal, La Bell Provence Quebec. Thus begins our story and Anand’s life journey in Canada, our Home and our new beginning. It is a beautiful emotional narrative, A song of life journey.
I have so much and much more to share about our beloved son’s life- journey which I shall endevour to narrate/fulfill in my memoir. There is so much more to share and celebrate his family life with his beloved wife Kusum, wonderful, bright and talented daughters Nina and Jasmine, home in London ON, Ottawa home, University life, exotic holidays and travels, all in a short 55 plus years on this mother earth.
“Death leaves a heart-ache no one can heal
Love leaves memories no one can steal”
Farewell my son, binny-boy, “A life lived well!” “OM Shaanthi”
Jana and Padma, Anjali (Aappa-Aamma and Anji)
Acharya and Shenoy family.

To Kusum, Nina and Jasmine …and to all your family. As a read (and concur with) the notes of respect written for Anand, I find there are no “new” words to express just what a fine and honourable gentleman he was in this life…and is and will be in the memories of all who were blessed with having known him. Both professionally as an aviator and personally as a friend, Anand is the epitome of talent and humility. Not just a good pilot…not just a good friend….not even just a good husband and father…Anand is the true definition of “good people”.
As you fly west into the next life my friend-I salute you with utmost respect and am honoured to have known you.
Blue skies my brother.
Mur

I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Anand Acharya. Anand took his Ph.D. course in macroeconomics with me. I was immediately impressed by his high intelligence and his outgoing personality. I was even more impressed when I learned that he was an airline pilot (and a Captain in the RCAF). While I did not closely follow his evolution as a very accomplished econometrician during his Ph.D. studies, we remained on very friendly terms during our chance encounters. I often inquired about his projects, and was very happy when he was awarded the Senate Medal, a well deserved recognition of his superior achievements. When I congratulated him, he responded in his usual unassuming manner that the whole experience had been "a rare privilege" for him. The passing away of such a talented and kind person at a young age is a loss to all of us. May he rest in peace. My most sincere condolences to his wife, his children, his parents and his entire family.

Anand was so kind and funny. He was so warm and inviting, and he asked the best questions. His presence always felt safe. I’m very lucky to have gotten to know him.
