Donald Philip Forward passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday January 8, 2024, at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He was 60 years old.
Born in Sussex, New Brunswick on November 14, 1963, son of the late Kenneth Arthur Forward, and Donna Ann Forward (nee McGinnis) of London, ON.
He is survived by his wife Irma, and son Jason.
Phil will be missed by his brothers Kenny, Tony and his sisters Linda (Grant) and Sandra (Rodney) and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Major Donald Philip Forward proudly served his country for 34 years, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017. Phil started his career in the Royal Canadian Airforce as a Communications Research Operator. Upon completing his bachelor’s degree, he took his commission and became an Intelligence Officer. Phil spent his career in postings from coast to coast in Canada and internationally in the United States and Europe. His career included numerous deployments to Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and more. On top of being a veteran he also managed to complete his Master of Science degree in the process.
Phil possessed unlimited amounts of energy and was always up for an adventure or playing another game of hockey, or a round of golf, including socializing with anyone keen to hear a story.
Phil never met a stranger. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and was generous to all. Phil’s dark sense of humor helped make light of his daily struggles of living with Parkinsons.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Beechwood Cemetery on Monday, 22 January. Visitation will commence at 11:00am, followed by a service and a military burial service. A reception will take place afterwards.

Sorry to hear about Phil's death. Phil and I worked together upon his return from Europe. We shared a love of motorcycling so had many fun discussions while focusing on our work tasks. Phil also had worked with my spouse, B. Cole, so there was even more connection.

My thoughts and prayers have been with Donna, Linda and the rest of Philip’s immediate and extended family since Donna told me that Philip was in the hospital. I’m so very sorry for your great loss. May Philip now rest in the peace he so well deserves. Love, Laurie

I am sorry to hear of Phil's passing. I worked with him at CFWC. He loved to talk hockey and was extremely proud of his son. Keith & I met Phil & Jason at a Senator's game while Phil was battling Parkinsons. Despite his struggles he had a big smile for us. My condolences to all.

To Irma, Jason, Family Members & Friends,
The members of the Canadian Forces Supplementary Radio (SUPRAD) System Oldtimers Association were saddened by the news of Phil's passing. In 1983, at the start of his impressive military career as a MOC 291 - Communicator Research Operator / Analyst, he made many friendships. Those who served with Phil, (before he took his commission and served in the Intelligence Branch), will forever remember his pleasant personality and all of the enjoyable times that were shared. We thank Major Forward for his 34 years of loyal service to Canada and our NATO allies. Please know that as members of your extended military family, we will be keeping you in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Deeply saddened to learn of Phils passing, I met him while deployed to Nairobi Kenya many years ago and still chuckle at his humour and moral boosting energy! Rest in peace brother, I will always honour your memory, thanks for all you brought to the table of life!

Very sad to learn this news. Phil did indeed have a zest for life and was always fun to be around; unless your team was beating his in the NORAD Canadian Hockey League! 😊 He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, of that I'm sure. Condolences to Irma, Jason and all his extended family.
