It is with immense sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our cherished mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, Diane Scharfe (nee Stubbs) on January 9th, 2024, at the age of 80. Diane passed away in the loving embrace and presence of her daughter and son-in-law, with her favourite song playing.
Diane is predeceased by her husband and treasured partner of 57 years, Reid Scharfe, her son Brandon, her father Frederick, and her mother Kathleen (nee Crouch). Diane leaves behind her devoted daughter, Amie (Dave O’Neill). She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Kieran, Liam and Seamus, who miss their beloved Granny terribly. Diane also leaves behind her sister Gail Booth (James) and many nieces and nephews.
Diane was a determined, loyal, loving, and generous woman. Diane spent the first half of her life moving throughout Canada – first as the daughter of a RCMP officer and later as the wife of a Navy man. Diane created a loving home for her family wherever they lived and her strength carried her through even the toughest challenges.
Diane could often be found with a book or her latest knitting or sewing project in her hands. She was also an avid gardener – something she loved to do side by side with Reid.
Diane was a devoted wife, mother, and Granny. Her grandsons meant the world to her and she loved nothing more than to spend time with them, laugh with them, and love them. She was an integral part of our family and we miss her beyond measure.
“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” A. A. Milne
A private service will be held for Diane’s immediate family and closest friends in the spring. We invite family and friends to leave a message in the virtual guestbook or to make a donation in Diane’s memory to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or The Canadian Cancer Society

My sincere condolences to Amie, Dave and the boys. Losing such a mother is never easy, Amie. You will feel her absence every day given the close relationship you were able to enjoy with her and your family for so long. Sending you all strength so you can get through these initial hard days.

Amie and family, please accept my sincerest condolences. Your mom was an amazing woman. It was because of her that I started at Nepean Police. She was off sick and they needed a replacement and when she was to come back I was suppose to be done but 31 years later I was still there. I always joked with her that she was the reason for the my insanity working for the police. She was one of a kind and a great lady. She will be missed in my heart but always remembered. My thoughts go out to all of you and this very sad time. She and your dad will always watch over you. Big hugs.

Words are really inadequate after all you have been through in the past few years. Just know that there are lots of people who care about you and carry you in their hearts. Sending much love and strength.

Amie and Family,
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your beloved Mother/Granny. I worked with Diane in the Freedom of Information Unit at the Ottawa Police Service. She was an absolute original; one respected her immediately for her intelligence, wit, and no nonsense approach, but also admired her for her strength, warmth, wisdom, and compassion. I looked up to Diane for all of those reasons but especially for her core values. Her love of family shone through daily and she treated people she encountered with respect and kindness. I loved our conversations and will treasure them always. Amie, she was so proud of you and your family. Thank you for sharing her with us. I carry her words in my heart and have passed some of her wisdom on to my own children. Thinking of you, your husband and your children. Take good care.
