Douglas died peacefully at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute with his loving wife, by his side. Douglas and his wife both had a military career.  Doug served for thirty-five years with the Corps of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) and Sylvie served for twenty years as a Logistic Officer (Finances).

Douglas’ health was affected by a condition named Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CETPH). This condition could no longer be controlled by numerous medications. Thanks to the University of Ottawa Hypertension Pulmonary Clinic, in particular DR V. Contreras and his dedicated staff as well as to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Hospital`s staff for exceptional Palliative Care, and for providing us a comforting moral support.

He is survived by his much-loved spouse Sylvie, their sons, Joel and David (Roxanne Lefebvre) and grandchildren Nicole Anderson and Jacob Anderson. He also leaves his sisters Alice Sherritt (Gordon), Maple Ridge, BC and his brother Ronald Wingert (Edita Dioneda), Regina, Sask; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Fia Wingert (Kvaas). Alfred was born and raised in Regina, Sask. and Fia was born and raised in Pitts Meadows, BC.

Douglas was born in Regina, Sask. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Chemical Engineering under the Regular Officer Training Plan. He completed his Basic Training in Chilliwack, BC, in 1974. It is there that he met his wife, also on Basic Training.  They were married in Arvida, Québec in 1976. Both completed a demanding and very fulfilling military career.

Douglas had numerous postings: to name some:  Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, Canadian Force Base Calgary, three tours with 1 Service Battalion, The Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadian) and Land Force Command Headquarters. He also served at National Defence Headquarters in many directing positions, including with Director General Land Equipment Program Management and, the Project Management Office Light Armoured Vehicles. In 1978, he spent six months in Egypt with 73 Canadian Service Battalion. He also served for a period of five months with 89 Canadian Logistic Unit in Namibia during the UN monitored elections in 1990. He commanded 202 Workshop Depot from 2002 to 2005.

He was extremely proud of his native Saskatchewan. He did the promotion of his province at every possible occasion. This was highly noted, in 2005, he proudly received  the Saskatchewan Centennial medal from the Honorable DR Lynda M Haverstock, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan for having been a brilliant Saskatchewan`s ambassador .

In 2008, from the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, Colonel Douglas Wingert retired from the Canadian Armed Forces.  Following retirement, he was a consultant with ADGA between 2009 and 2011.

In 2011, Douglas and Sylvie bought a condo in Maple Ridge, BC in order to be closer to his aging mother, uncles and aunts. Sylvie and Douglas spent a few months each year with them.

This last transition in the life of a loved one, still young at heart and in spirit made us realise how important the needs are to care for cardiac patients. The family would greatly appreciate that, in lieu of flowers, donations be to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation.  Our journey with this Institution made us realise how many more families could be helped with donations to the Foundation instead of flowers. We thank you in advance for your generosity.

There will be a celebration of Douglas’ life  at the Beechwood Cemetery, 280  ave Beechwood, Ottawa, Ontario on Thursday January 18, 2024 at 13h00.

~~~~~~~~
Douglas s'est éteint paisiblement à l'Institut de Cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa, soutenu de son épouse Sylvie à ses côtés. Douglas avait servi les Forces armées canadiennes (FAC) pendant 35 ans, comme Ingénieur au sein du Corps du Génie Électrique et Mécanique Royal du Canada (GEMRC) et Sylvie pendant 20 ans en Logistiques (Finances).
La santé de Douglas s'était aggravée par une condition connue sous le nom d’Hypertension Pulmonaire Thromboembolique Chronique (HPTC) qui ne pouvait plus être ralentie par aucun médicament. Merci mille fois à l'Institut de Cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa, plus particulièrement pour le dévouement du Dr V. Contreras et de son équipe, ainsi que tout le personnel de l'Hôpital de cet Institut, pour avoir donné à Douglas des soins palliatifs de qualité exceptionnelle, et qui nous ont aussi accordé un soutien moral très puissant.
En plus de son épouse adorée Sylvie, Douglas laisse dans le deuil ses deux fils bien-aimés: Joël and David (Roxanne Lefebvre) et ses deux petits-enfants Nicole Anderson et Jacob Anderson, sa sœur Alice Sherritt (Gordon), de Maple Ridge, C.-B. et son frère Ronald Wingert (Edita Dioneda), de Regina, en Saskatchewan (Sask.); en plus de plusieurs neveux et nièces, cousins et cousines. Il a été prédécédé par ses parents, Alfred et Fia Wingert (Kvaas). Alfred était né et avait grandi à Regina, Sask. et Fia était née et avait grandi à Pitts Meadows, en C.-B.
Douglas était né à Regina, Sask. Il avait obtenu son Baccalauréat de l'Université de la Saskatchewan en Génie Chimique sous le Programme de Formation pour les Officiers de la Régulière. Pendant sa formation de Base comme officier, à Chilliwack en C.-B., il a rencontré sa future épouse Sylvie Guillot, qui faisait aussi sa formation de Base comme officier, à l'été 1974. Ils se sont mariés à Arvida, au Québec, en 1976. Ils ont tous les deux accompli une carrière militaire mouvementée et florissante.
Douglas a servi à plusieurs mutations dont : à la Base Forces Canadienne Gagetown, au 1er Battalion de Service à plusieurs reprises, à la Base Forces Canadienne Calgary, au Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadian), et au Quartier Général du Commandement des Forces Terrestres. Il a aussi servi plusieurs positions de direction au sein du Quartier Général de la Défenses Nationale dont à la Direction Générale Gestion du Programme d’Équipement Terrestre et à la Direction du Projet-Véhicule blindé léger.  En 1978, il a aussi servi six mois en Égypte avec le 73ième Bataillon des services du Canada et cinq mois à la 89e Unité Canadienne de Logistique en Namibie en 1990, lors d’élections supervisées par les Nations Unies. Il a commandé le 202 ième Dépôt d’Ateliers de 2002 à 2005.
Il était très fier de sa province natale: la Saskatchewan. Il utilisait toutes les occasions pour la mentionner  et la promouvoir. Cette ‘’publicité’’ fût remarquée. L’honorable Dr Lynda M. Haverstock, lieutenant gouverneure de la Saskatchewan, lui décerna la Médaille du Centenaire de la province en 2005, parce qu’il a su être un brillant ambassadeur de la Saskatchewan .
En 2008,  au Quartier Général de la Défense Nationale à Ottawa, le Colonel Douglas Wingert pris sa retraite des Forces Armées Canadienne.  Après sa retraite, il a été un consultant de 2009 à 2011 pour ADGA.
En 2011, Douglas et Sylvie ont acheté un condominium à Maple Ridge, en C.-B. afin de se rapprocher géographiquement de sa mère âgée, de ses oncles et de ses tantes, où ils y passaient plusieurs mois par année.
Cette dernière transition de la vie d'un être cher, encore jeune de cœur et d'esprit, nous a fait réaliser l'importance capitale des soins donnés par l'Institut de Cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa. C'est pour cette raison que la famille vous demande, si vous le pouvez, de ne pas offrir de fleurs, mais de faire un don à la Fondation de l'Institut de Cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa, afin d'aider d'autres familles qui feront face à une tragédie semblable.   Notre famille vous remercie à l'avance pour votre générosité.
Nous célébrons la vie de Douglas Leo Wingert  au cimetière Beechwood, 280 ave Beechwood, Ottawa, Ontario,  le 18 janvier 2024, à 13h00.
I hope you take comfort in your wonderful memories and the family you built together. May he have fair winds and following seas.
I was shocked and sadened to hear of Doug's passing. As a long serving RCEME officer, I knew Doug as a well known and highly respected professional who will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences to Sylvie and the Wingert family.
Mes plus sincères condoléances Sylvie et toute la famille. Je suis vraiment triste du décès d’un ami et mentor parti trop jeune. Bon courage dans cette épreuve de la vie. J’ai eu du plaisir à croiser Doug a maintes reprises depuis 2004 et appris à découvrir son sens de l’humour particulier. Beaucoup se souviendront qu’il aimait raconter l’histoire de l’oisillon tombé du nid. Repose en paix mon ami. Arte et Marte.
Great man and human person. As a military leader, a person with experience and wisdom who enjoyed life. Il va nous manquer. Je suis persuadé qu'il va continuer de plaider la cause de la Saskatchewan en haut!
We lost a very dear friend and also an influential man:( Knowing Sylvie and Doug for over 25 years, I still vividly remember when he attended my signing in ceremony, 17 yrs ago. Also, inspired my son Ryan to become a RCEME officer too, both shared common passion in Chemical Engineering. Since his passing, wonderful memories started flooding back. Rest in peace Doug, you will deeply missed:( Our condolence to Sylvie, David and Joel 🙏😌🕊️.
My deepest condolences to the family of Col(ret) Wingert. I have fond memories of my Phase Training grad mess dinner where Col Wingert as 'Uncle Doug' passed on his wisdom to all of us candidates. His great sense of humour echoed along side his peer Col Karen Ritchie as she had called herself 'Aunt Karen'. It was heart warming and inspiring to hear from down to earth senior RCEME leadership, and certainly inspired many including myself to follow in their paths they paved in the CAF. RIP Sir.
Sylvie: Please accept my sincere condolences. I had the pleasure to get to know your husband when he was the Branch Advisor and I was the Branch Chief. I truly enjoyed travelling with him and discovered a warm, dedicated and highly intelligent human being. His sense of humour was addictive and attracted everyone to him. I will forever have only positive memories of him. Repose en Paix mon colonel.
Mes sincères condoléances à toi Sylvie et la famille,
J’ai eu le privilège de côtoyer Doug à plusieurs reprises au cours des années passées ensemble en uniforme. Doug était un officier exceptionnel, à l’écoute des gens et très professionnel tout en partageant son bon sens de l’humour. Je n’ai que de beaux souvenirs de nos rencontres.
Rest in peace Doug.
