We are saddened to announce the passing of John Curtis Kennedy Chessman. Ken passed away quietly on September 17, 2023 at the age of 78, in Ottawa.
Ken was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 43 years, Francine (Gaudreau). He was a proud father to Kevin (Michelle) and Jayson and a dotting grandfather to Cédric and William.
Ken was born on December 6, 1944 in London Ontario. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1961 as a Radio Operator. He obtained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer before retiring in 1998. During his illustrious 37-year career, he was deployed five times with the United Nations’ peacekeepers and served two postings in Germany with NATO. He was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration medal with 2 bars, the Special Service medal (NATO), the Canadian Peacekeeping Service medal, the UN Emergency Force medal, the UN Forces in Cyprus medal (twice), the UN Emergency Force Middle East medal and the UN Disengagement Observation Force medal.
After his retirement, Ken continued to travel the world. He returned to Belgium for 3 years in the early 2000s. He also spent several years wintering in Florida with family and friends.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the various Home and Community Care support workers, the medical personnel at the Ottawa Hospital, Hôpital Montfort and the Glebe Centre.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre’s Hall of Colours (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa) on Saturday October 21, 2023. Visitation will be held starting at 10 am. A Service with Military Honours and interment will follow at 12pm, at the National Military Cemetery.
If desired, the family welcomes donations to be made in CWO JCK Chessman’s name to the Royal Canadian Legion or Diabetes Canada.

Ken fut prédécédé par son épouse bien-aimée, de 43 ans, Francine (Gaudreau). Il laisse dans le deuil ses fils Kevin (Michelle) et Jayson, ainsi que ses petits-fils Cédric et William.
Ken est né le 6 décembre 1944 à London en Ontario. Il s’est enrôlé dans les Forces Armées Canadiennes en 1961 en tant qu’opérateur radio. Il a obtenu le rang d’adjudant-chef avant de prendre sa retraite en 1998. Lors de ses 37 ans de carrière il fut déployé cinq fois avec les Nations-Unies en tant que Casques bleus. Ken passa aussi plusieurs années en Allemagne pour deux affectations militaires avec l’OTAN. Il fut octroyé la Décoration des Forces canadiennes (avec deux barrettes), la Médaille du service spécial (OTAN), la Médaille canadienne du maintien de la paix, la médaille Force d’urgence des Nations Unies, la médaille Force des Nations Unies à Chypre (à deux reprises), médaille Force d’urgence des Nations Unies au Moyen-Orient et la médaille Force d’observation des Nations Unies pour le désengagement des forces.
Lors de sa retraite, Ken aimait beaucoup voyager. Il retourna trois ans en Belgique. Ken a aussi passé plusieurs hivers en Floride avec sa famille et ses amis.
La famille désire remercier le personnel des services de soutien à domicile et en milieu communautaire d’Ottawa ainsi que le personnel médical de l’Hôpital Montfort, l’Hôpital d’Ottawa et le Centre Glebe.
La famille recevra les condoléances à la Salle des Drapeaux du Centre commémoratif national Beechwood (280 avenue Beechwood, Ottawa) le samedi 21 octobre 2023 à compter de 10h. Le service funéraire et l’inhumation suivra au Cimetière militaire national à 12h.
La famille encourage à faire un don à la Légion royale canadienne ou Diabète Canada.
