1940-2023
John passed quietly, surrounded by family on 18 September 2023 at Perley Health, Ottawa.
Survived by his beloved wife Carol (nee Keddy), sons Michael (Sarah Hobbs), Mark (Linda Mackay) and John (Maureen McCann), and grandchildren Paige, Cole, Erika, Léa, Katherine and Lauren.
Immigrating to Canada in 1954, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy via the VENTURE program (class of ‘59) wherein he found the structure he needed, and life he sought. A career naval officer he commanded at sea in HMCShips FRASER, ANNAPOLIS and MACKENZIE, and ashore at the Naval Officer Training Center VENTURE, and CFB Halifax.
He provided his boys a solid start in life and let us find our own paths.
Friends and family are invited to an informal, drop-in Gathering of Remembrance at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Saturday, October 14th from 10am to 1pm.
Donations in lieu of flowers preferred, to Canada’s Naval Memorial Trust (hmcssackville.ca), Perleyhealth.ca, or Alzheimer.ca.

Noreen and I were very saddened to learn of Capt (N) Nethercott's passing. He was Base Commander in Halifax when I was Director of the Stadacona Band. He treated the band extremely well and was supportive of the myriad of activities we did to support the Canadian Navy, Maritime Forces Atlantic and the Base. He and Carol were always gracious hosts and first class ambassadors for our Navy. May he rest in peace and may fond memories of a life well lived surround Carol and his family forever.

Nick and I were deeply saddened to hear the news of John’s passing. Our most sincere condolences go out to Carol and the family.
When John and Carol moved to Stittsville, we quickly became good friends and have many fond memories of the many happy social times we spent together and with our circle of fiends.
We learned a lot about navy life from both John and Carol and listened to his version of commanding at sea and Carol’s version of commanding at home and who had the toughest job. It was a hoot to listen to their playful banter; John, in his quiet, teasing and loving manner agreed with Carol, telling her she had earned her own stripes as ‘Captain of the Home Front’, I recall Carol’s hearty laugh his cleaver retort.
We feel grateful to have known John, may his family find comfort in all the wonderful memories that he has left behind.
