It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Eleanor Murphy (Underhill), in Ottawa, at the age of 95 years. She passed away quietly in her sleep on August 2, 2023, following a brief illness.

Margaret was born on June 13, 1928, to Herman and Hazel (Astle) Underhill in Quarryville, NB. Margaret is survived by her husband John Douglas “JD”, her sons Wayne (Erin) and David (Lisa), grandchildren Lyndsay (Ben), Terry, Leah-Anna, Meredith, Melissa, Meaghan and by her great-grandchildren, Nate and Brooke. She will also be dearly missed by her siblings Shirley, Clarence, Daryl, Vera, Mildred, Lorraine and Sandra. Predeceased by her parents, her bothers Reggi, Lesley and Herman and by her sisters Eva and Marie.

Margaret moved to Moncton and worked at Eatons for many years before meeting and marrying John Douglas Murphy on November 14, 1953. They had 2 children, Wayne Douglas, and David Michael. Life in a military family brought many moves from Halifax, NS to Wainwright, AB, to Montreal, QC, to Kingston, ON, to Saint John, NB, to Oromocto, NB and finally Ottawa, ON. Margaret worked for the Civil Service in Ottawa for many years before retiring in 1993.

She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, crocheting, baking, and spending time with her many friends and neighbours in the Carson Grove neighbourhood. She loved playing cards and especially enjoyed her trips to her beloved Blackville, NB by the Miramichi River, to visit her many brothers and sisters.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1pm Monday, August 21, 2023 at Perley Health Ottawa, 1750 Russell Road in Lupton Hall.

We will sincerely miss Margaret. She was always interested in us and our family over the years. She made baby blankets for both Sean and Amanda and our grandkids.
Peace be with you. Maria and Paul

Dear Murphy family,

We just discovered this obituary today. Sorry for the long delay.
My mother Anne was Marg bridesmaid and roomed together at 721 Steadman Street in Moncton during the 1950's. Mom tells a story about Marg finding some very large boots and leaving them in front of her roommates (Bernice ?) door over night. She had left them there to make people think Bernice had a male visitor. Great laughs when Bernice woke up and tripped over the boots.

My Mom misses her and is sorry to hear of her passing.

Regards,

Anne Ross Trask and
D'Arcy Trask
