My sincere condolences to Fred’s family. I first met Fred on ON in 1972 and quickly came to realize that he was a unique person and an excellent tradesman. I could go on telling tales of Fred’s life, one might say that it would be extensive. Fred lived his life believing he had a special place in this world and he did. He loved submarines and the people that served in them. I know that I’m going to miss him since he was a special person that I truly admired. Until we meet again my friend, you have the watch.

Fred was a pillar of enthusiasm for the submarine community. I will always remember with fondness his patience for my pedantic questions about his sonars when I was new to boats. He always brought a smile to my face whenever I ran into him over the years. My heartfelt condolences to the Schatz family.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends. I met Fred 10 years ago and he has been my LCQM partner in crime for the last five years and thought me a lot about Navy and subs. You will be missed Fred, rest in peace.

I sailed with Fred in the late 70's and early 80s. He was a dedicated submariner and sonarman. I remember his laugh and willingness to help a young officer qualify and learn the ropes of the submarine sonar world. His dedication and devotion to SAOC was reflected in the time and care he put into producing the branch newsletter - always newsworthy and reminded all of why we served in boats. RIP Fred. My sincere condolences to your family and friends.

Knew Fred from the last few years: great colleague, mentor and guide.
A professional to core, with a great sense of duty first, but also humor.
Grateful to have known you Fred and thank you.

I enjoyed sailing with Fred. He was a great guy with a big heart, always giving of himself for the greater good - be it at sea or ashore. The legacy he’s left both in and out of uniform is profound. He will certainly be missed by all - rest in peace my friend.

I only recently had the pleasure to get to know Fred through his nephew. I'm glad we were able to take him for brunch in his last birthday while we were visiting Ottawa. He will be missed at Summer BBQ on the west coast.
