Passed away at his home in Ottawa, on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the age of 78. Beloved father of Robert, David, and Amanda. Cherished grandfather of Timothy, Malcolm, and Charlotte. Loving brother of Kathy (Glenn), and Ann (Dave), predeceased by his brother John. Son of the late Johann Schatz and late Annie Schatz (nee Liske). Fred is fondly remembered by Maxine Schatz and his son-in-law Steve.
Family and friends are invited to Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa), for a visitation on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, from 12 noon until the time of the Memorial Service in Beechwood’s Sacred Space at 1 p.m. Interment to take place in the National Military Cemetery located at Beechwood Cemetery. For those who wish to donate in Fred’s memory, you may do so towards a charity that is close to your heart.

I remember serving alongside Fred in the early 90's. There was something special about being under the surface with people who knew how to do the business. My guess is we shared over 200 nights at sea together with many alongside duty watches to add. Fred never let us down. In a community like ours that is an important legacy. I will remember the good times we had and will especially miss my daily early morning video calls with my big brother. Fred was my rock. I am fortunate to have enjoyed his company in recent years when he came to the West coast to enjoy family BBQs, and got to see the pleasure he got travelling by sea plane.
