Spiritual Indigenous symbols to adorn Canadian military headstones, joining other sacred emblems

A pair of spiritual Indigenous symbols will now be allowed to be engraved on Canadian military headstones.
The First Nations medicine wheel and the Métis infinity symbol are the 10th and 11th icons that the Canadian Armed Forces will permit on military markers, joining such other sacred emblems as the Christian cross, the Jewish Star of David, the Muslim crescent and star, and the Buddhist wheel of righteousness. The new symbols were unveiled on Tuesday at Beechwood Cemetery in a ceremony featuring Lt.-Gen. Jocelyn Paul, who last Thursday became the Canadian Army’s first Indigenous commander.
