Raising the Flags: A Historic Moment at the CSIS National Memorial Cemetery
On November 7, 2024, the CSIS National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood marked a profound milestone during the CSIS Annual Remembrance Ceremony. For the first time, the flags of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and Canada were raised together, a powerful symbol of respect and gratitude for the service and sacrifice of CSIS members who have dedicated their lives to protecting our nation.
The CSIS National Memorial Cemetery
Established in 2014, the CSIS National Memorial Cemetery was founded in partnership with Beechwood Cemetery to honour the invaluable contributions of Canada’s intelligence community. This unique and sacred space provides a place of reflection and remembrance for those who have served behind the scenes, ensuring the security and freedoms that Canadians hold dear.
Over the past decade, the cemetery has become a lasting tribute to the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of CSIS members—individuals whose critical work often goes unnoticed, yet whose impact is immeasurable.
The Ceremony
The CSIS Annual Remembrance Ceremony has long been a time to reflect on the sacrifices of CSIS members, but this year’s event carried extra significance. The ceremony began with the historic raising of the CSIS and Canadian flags, marking a new chapter in the cemetery’s history.
“The flags raised here today stand as a tribute to the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of our members. They represent the enduring values of service and dedication to Canada that are at the heart of CSIS,” remarked Don Mahar, past-president of the Pillar Society and a member of the CSIS National Memorial Cemetery Committee.
The flag-raising was followed by solemn moments of reflection, the laying of wreaths, and heartfelt speeches from dignitaries and CSIS representatives. Together, attendees honoured the legacy of those who have served in silence, their efforts often unseen but their impact deeply felt.
Looking Ahead
The raising of the flags symbolizes more than a ceremonial act; it marks a new era in the legacy of the CSIS National Memorial Cemetery. The Canadian and CSIS flags, standing side by side, represent the unity and unwavering dedication of the intelligence community to the nation they protect. This moment reinforces the importance of remembrance, ensuring that the contributions of those who have served in the shadows are never forgotten.
We invite all Canadians to visit the CSIS National Memorial Cemetery at Beechwood, Canada’s National Cemetery, to pay their respects and learn more about the incredible legacy of Canada’s intelligence professionals.
As the flags continue to wave over this sacred space, they stand as enduring symbols of pride, respect, and gratitude for those who have dedicated their lives to the safety and freedom of Canada.
