It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Victor LaFontaine, lovingly known as “Max” or “Uncle Max,” who peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 27th.
Michael was born in Pembroke, Ontario in 1955. After high school, he set out to London, Ontario, where he attended the University of Western Ontario and began his distinguished 40-year career in property management. It is there he raised his three children: Skylar, Cameron, and Glenn. In 2000, Michael and his sons relocated to Ottawa to be closer to family, reuniting with his parents and siblings.
Michael’s life was defined by his unwavering zest for living. He cherished every moment spent with family and friends, never passing up an opportunity to share a laugh, a meal, or a glass of his favorite wine. Known for his love of cooking, Michael took great pleasure in preparing meals for others, often surrounded by those who meant the most to him. In the summer, he found peace and joy at the family cottage on Black Bay, Petawawa, continuing treasured traditions. In the winter months, he could often be found snowmobiling with the “Crutch Lake gang” or enjoying unforgettable trips to Kitzbühel, Austria, with his beloved travel companion, Jenny.
Michael was the oldest of six children born to the late Marina and Robert LaFontaine. He will be greatly missed by his sister Renee LaFontaine (Clyde Marston), brother Todd LaFontaine (Marisa Fosco), sister Karen Finch (Todd Finch) and sister Suzanne LaFontaine as well as his many nieces and nephews.

I’m so sorry to hear of Michael’s passing. I went to High School with him and remember how popular he was. I hadn’t seen him for many years until these past couple of summers at Black Bay. We shared some laughs and reminisced about High School days. I’m sure you’ll miss him incredibly.

Very saddened to hear of Michael's passing. At a time when our condo needed help, Michael came to our rescue (along with Glenn). We benefited much from his wisdom and experience and I shall miss him.

I am very sorry to hear about Michael's passing. I have had the privilege of working with Michael for almost 20 years and consider him a friend, not just a colleague. My deepest condolences to the family and those that are close loved ones.

Uncle Max had a heart of gold - kind, loving, and endlessly generous. He had a special way of making everyone feel loved and valued, always bringing warmth and joy to those around him. I will miss his contagious laugh and the countless happy memories we have with him as a family. Sending all of my love to my family and those who were close to Michael.

I remember Michael from Grade school at Lourdes. He was a lovely soprano in Sister St Jude's choir. Michael was kind to all. He would invite everyone to his parties. He paid attention to every detail. We reconnected at the Fellowes High School reunions. Michael enjoyed the last one June 2024. He looked amazing in his camel blazer and enjoyed himself thoroughly. We will miss you Michael. I never got up for that boat ride. God bless. Mary Josey
PS He did have an awesome family.

I’m so sorry to hear this sad news. I reconnected briefly with him a few years ago while his dad was staying at a retirement residence in Ottawa where I worked for a short time. Michael was my first boyfriend and his dad shared some fun memories with us during the short visit. Gone much too young. Thanks for the good memories Mike.
I met Michael through his brother Todd. We spent much time at Todd’s camp on Lac Laforge. I’ll forever miss his wit, stories, and grand smile. I’m very sorry for his families loss.
