Sadly, we announce that Joanne (née WASYLKOWSKI) passed peacefully in her 78th year on Saturday, May 24th with family & friends by her side. Predeceased by her husband Livio (Tony). Will be missed dearly by her children Andrea (Brent) and Jonathan (Kate). Loving Baba to grandchildren Mara, Livia, Evan and Annie.

One of 7 children from a Saskatchewan farming family, she enlisted in the Air Force in 1969 and served for 22 years retiring as a Master Corporal. Joanne remained fiercely independent despite facing long battles with myotonic dystrophy, heart failure and lymphoma. She was a proud Ukrainian-Canadian who shared her traditions with her family and who was always ready to cheer her Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Immense gratitude to Dr. Balla for her compassionate care and the Perley PSWs who assured Mom's independence for as long as possible. Service to be held at the Annunciation of the Lord Parish on Thursday June 5th at 11 am. Reception to follow. Joanne has requested that people wear their favourite colours.

Donations to the Ottawa Heart Institute or Muscular Dystrophy Canada would be appreciated.

Dear Andrea, Jonathan and family, we were very sorry that your mom took a sudden turn last week after experiencing failing health this past year. It was tragic and heartbreaking to learn of her death so soon after contacting us to keep her in our prayers. We have very fond memories of time spent with all of you and a very special memory of a Ukrainian Christmas dinner that we have never forgotten for the awesome array of mouth watering food and your company. While we cannot be there in person please know we will be holding you all in our hearts at her funeral service next Thursday and also in the following days as you grieve such a great loss. You were incredibly blessed to have her as your mom.😔🫂🙏💕💔

Condolences to Andrea and Jonathan and families. Will miss my sister very much. We had great times when we all lived in Winnipeg, especially the camping times. Singing songs with Tony (Elvia) both Tony and Paul would sing and dance to that tune. Also Joanne taking my family to the festivities on July 1st, Canada Day in Ottawa. Rest in Peace and love you lots.

Our deepest condolences to Andrea and family and Johnathan and family. I will always remember Aunty Joanne like a second Mother. Always buying me things every time Andrea and I would have a sleep over at their place. I remember our families doing so much together. Aunty Joanne always spreading her wisdom and encouragement. She will be missed deeply by all of us. Rest in peace Aunty Joanne!

We never had the chance to meet Joanne Marie Degan in person, but we feel like we knew her well through the many stories shared by Jon and Kate. She sounded like a remarkable person - an amazing mother and grandmother, and someone deeply proud of her Ukrainian heritage. We can only imagine how difficult this time must be for the family, and we hope that in time, the grief will be eased by the many happy memories and the love you shared.
Rest in peace.

Hi Andrea,
My sincere condolences to you and your family.
It is not easy losing a parent at any age.
I lost both my parents thirty years ago.
What brings me peace is thinking about them every day to keep their spirit alive in my heart and memories.
I hope that your many fond memories will bring you comfort.
Janice xx
